This session is an invitation to examine the many ways well-meaning efforts to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion remain vulnerable to the influence of white Eurocentric culture perceived as normative in our society. DEI efforts can be inconspicuously derailed by embedded dominant ideologies that manifest through words and language. In our time together we will begin to: Deconstruct frequently used DEI constructs to unpack implied assumptions embedded in common DEI praxis. Explore divergent language and thought practices helpful in reframing racial/cultural equity conversations in our religious, social, and political institutions. Examine internal biases that may challenge our progress toward our intended goals. Imagine the world we choose to create. Introduction: Vincent C. Flewellen ChiefDiversity Officer, Webster University Speaker: Rev. Webster University is a private, non-profit institution with a century of time-tested results. Today, we serve students both in the U.S. and worldwide. Est. 1915. ► https://www.webster.edu/ #WebsterUniversity In 1915, the Sisters of Loretto had a bold vision — to establish a university that would admit and educate only women. Opening with five students, the institution’s first graduating class totaled just two women. Today our main campus looks quite different than it did more than a century ago — and even different from when it was renamed Webster University in 1983. Now, the University engages individuals living and working around the world, honoring the Sisters of Loretto’s legacy in the pursuit of academic excellence, equality and global citizenship.
