Russia Holds National Day of Mourning for 92 Plane Crash Victims

Russia held a national day of mourning on Monday for the 92 victims on board the Tu-154 military plane that crashed the day before. The Russian military plane crashed into the Black Sea shortly after takeoff from the Black Sea resort of Sochi at 05:40 Moscow time (0240 GMT) on Sunday, killing all on board. The victims include 64 members of the Alexandrov Ensemble, a renowned choir of the Russian Armed Forces. Many people, including Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin and other officials, mourned their loss by presenting bouquets and lighting candles outside the choir’s office in Moscow. "December 25 is a day of great sorrow, especially for people who know the victims. Yesterday when I heard they had died, we were shocked. I think the Alexandrov Ensemble is a great team. They should come back -- they should not have passed away in this manner," said Soviet and Russian actor Vasily Lanovoy. "This is Russia's best choir. I come from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). They had performed in my hometown six times for memorial events -- of course, most were for celebrating certain days. This is a group of excellent people. I do not know what to say.
