Prof. Tamar Mitts, Assistant Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, and a valued member of both the Data Science Institute and the Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, shares valuable insights from her latest book, Safe Havens for Hate: The Challenge of Moderating Online Extremism. In this timely and important work, she explores the complexities of moderating online hate while balancing the principles of free expression and digital governance. Prof. Tamar’s research explores pressing questions at the nexus of technology, conflict, and political behavior. She investigates how digital platforms influence political violence, extremism, and public opinion, with particular focus on the role of social media during conflict, the strategies of violent and nonviolent movements online, and the manipulation of media to sway public sentiment. Her work combines innovative data collection methods with rigorous empirical designs, leveraging insights from digital media to illuminate the dynamics of modern political conflict. Prof. Tamar’s research has been published in top academic journals such as American Political Science Review, International Organization, Journal of Politics, Perspectives on Politics, and Journal of Economic Perspectives.
