Innovative training powered by augmented reality and virtual twin technology is transforming infection prevention at Saint-Louis Hospital AP-HP, equipping healthcare professionals with immersive tools to visualize and mitigate airborne transmission risks. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: Respiratory infections in healthcare facilities are among the top ten healthcare associated infections. So, it is a major issue. Pr Benoît PLAUD, Head of the Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Department, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: On airborne transmission of pathogens, we had few or no tools available. To really visualize the problem of air contamination, augmented reality is perfectly suited. Hôpital Saint-Louis AP-HP - Revealing the invisible Pr Benoît PLAUD, Head of the Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Department, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: The post-intervention monitoring room at Saint-Louis has 24 beds permanently used to accommodate post-surgery patients and also for emergency care. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: It is a very, very large care space where there is no physical partition between patients and therefore no barrier to avoid the airborne transmission of pathogens. Pr Benoît PLAUD, Head of the Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Department, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: We must be able to provide training and prevention to healthcare professionals on this air contamination. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: The idea really is to be able to systematically integrate, in all the trainings that we can perform, an innovative learning tool, which uses augmented reality. Pr Benoît PLAUD, Head of the Anesthesia and Surgical Intensive Care Department, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: The benefit of our collaboration with Dassault Systèmes is the development of an innovative educational tool, based on augmented reality, which allows healthcare professionals to become concretely aware of what airborne transmission is by visualizing airflows – whether originating from patients, healthcare professionals or the ventilation, and circulating in open care spaces. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: Its role was to be able to combine all the aeraulic data from the care space, then to create a virtual twin, and make it available on the iPad to offer this augmented reality tool. Dr Emmanuel DUDOIGNON, ICU Physician, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: The value of this virtual twin is to reveal the invisible and better handle immunocompromised patients who are at risk of developing severe infections related to respiratory infections. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: Thanks to airflow modeling, we realize that some areas are more at risk than others, both for the emission of respiratory particles as well as for their concentration and inhalation. [We really represent the path of respiratory particles as it is in reality. So we really make the invisible visible. When we talk about abstract things, it speaks less to people than when it is well illustrated. It helps to better understand, for sure.] Dr Emmanuel DUDOIGNON, ICU Physician, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: This experience allowed me to objectively visualize the risks related to patients, but also the risks related to the environment. Thus, when we place invasive devices, in particular central lines for chemotherapy infusions in immunocompromised patients, this would enable us to place patients in locations with a lower risk. Dr Guillaume MELLON, Attending Physician, Head of Infection Prevention and Control Team, Saint-Louis Hospital, AP-HP: When we make the invisible visible, we become aware of the stakes, the risk and therefore we are more aware, more active in preventing this risk.
