Plasmas – ionized gases – power the sun and stars, and will one day provide nearly unlimited electricity through harnessing fusion reactions. These plasmas are hugely hot and extremely challenging to control. There is another type of plasma called “low temperature plasmas” – LTPs – whose average temperatures are low enough that LTPs can interact with and synthesize materials, activate liquids and even be in contact with living tissue (animals, plants, people). LTPs can be used to make chemically reactive environments that have led to their use for fabricating microelectronic components, solar cells, modifying polymers for biocompatibility and in human healthcare. In this video, Prof. Peter Bruggeman of the University of Minnesota describes the many society benefiting applications of LTPs, and his research group’s efforts in advancing LTPs for more sustainable materials synthesis and manufacturing.
