Ed McBain (1926–2005) was the pen name of American author and screenwriter Evan Hunter, who was born Salvatore Lombino and who changed his name due to perceived (actual?) prejudice in the publishing industry against "Eyetalians." Best known for his 87th Precinct series starring Steve Carella, Meyer Meyer, Arthur Brown, and Cotton Hawes, he also wrote novels under his real name, including The Blackboard Jungle (1954). Over the course of his career, McBain wrote more than 100 novels and also worked on screenplays, including Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963). I like McBain's tight, shorter, early-career 87th Precinct novels a wee bit more than I like the later books, which feel a little padded (but are still very enjoyable). If you want to try the police procedural genre as written by an amazingly gifted practitioner, Ed McBain is definitely the best place to start. Then move on to others, such as Maurice Procter, J. J. Marric, and Dell Shannon. (—Steven Rigolosi, October 1, 2024)
