I get asked a lot about how painful a tattoo is or if it’s not painful at all and there is no easy way to answer this for each person so in this article I will discuss how to make the pain even more barrable. Look I clicked baited you okay? A tattoo cannot be painless without numbing which is an option but let’s focus on making it painless without numbing first. The first thing you should know is that your tattoo is probably going to hurt less if you get it done in the morning, that is because your adrenaline level is at its highest in the morning and it can help with tolerating pain easier. so if you got a big tattoo to do, set your appointment for early in the morning. Now let’s get into it Relax The first tip is for especially the first-timers but it applies to everyone. Now I know that you are anticipating the pain mostly but this is important, tensing up or holding your breath to brace for the needle will not make it less painful in fact it will just make it worse for you as you concentrate a lot more on what’s happening to your skin. This may also lead to your tattoo artist making a mistake as you go in and out of tension or try catching a breath before holding it again, so be mindful of this and really just relax. Get a distraction The other thing you can do is to distract yourself, I find it to be more of a breeze when I watch a movie or documentary or every listen to a podcast while I get tattooed. So with that, I have realized that when I advise my clients to get distracted by either watching a movie or even reading a book they can tolerate the pain even better. You can also have a conversation with your tattoo artist as long as you don’t move too much or distract him then talking also helps if you both can find a balance there. If your pain tolerance is super high or the tattoo eventually is soothing which actually happens to a lot of people, you may even fall asleep. Eat a big meal and hydrate The last thing you want to do is be starving while you are getting tattooed and suffering through the tattoo, food is fuel for the body literally and will help your body combat the pain of the needle. I know this from experience in being tattooed and tattooing a lot of people. It’s best to get tattooed on a full stomach after a big hearty meal especially breakfast if you get your tattoo in the morning. Also, hydrate and I mean drink a lot of water 24hours before your tattoo session. Eat as healthy as you possibly can. Drinking water makes it easier for your skin to take in ink and your tattoo will get done faster. Do not drink alcohol! I am from South Africa and over here people love their cold or hot beverages(hot stuff). I even get customers walking in completely sloshed, some people give me a heads-up that they plan to finish a bottle of vodka or gin just to numb the pain. Unfortunately, this is a very bad idea cause 1, alcohol dehydrates you which goes against the tip to hydrate. 2 it thins your blood if you drink the night before or just before getting a tattoo your blood will thin which result in a lot of bleeding. A lot of bleeding pushes the ink out which forces the tattoo artist to over your skin many times which is more likely to increase skin irritation and therefore pain. So drinking before getting a tattoo whether right before or the night before is generally a bad idea. Numbing I put this tip right at the end cause most of us don’t like it, by us I mean tattoo artists. Especially if we don’t by time, this is because although it’s very effective it’s also time-consuming. Numbing products contain lidocaine which is the substance the numbs your skin making it less painful, it comes in different quantities per product. So the effectiveness varies, the numbing also stops at some point meaning depending on your tattoo size at some point you will have to reapply the numbing product which takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the potency. But rest assured it will kill the pain. If you are going to go this route get ready to be charged for your session by the hour and expect it to take longer than you would like making it more expensive than you may want, but if you really want this it would be worth it. I am curious to know what tattoo you plan on getting next, comment below with your next tattoo.
