Juvie Boy Entertainers JBE brass band plays popular songs for klopse road marches!

Juvie Boy Entertainers or J.B.E is a minstrel group from Lentegeur in Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats in Cape Town. There are tons of minstrel groups like this on the Cape Flats and even Boland. Troops compete annually in the singing/exhibition competitions in about 17 categories which includes klopsejol, best drum major, best dressed, best band, adult sentimental, junior sentimental, group song, coon song, English comic, Afrikaans comic etc. The biggest troop to my knowledge was the Starlights from Paarl that had 5000 members after a man whose passed on n was affectionately known as Hajjie Bucks decided to get kids from rural towns and show them the City. Juvie Boys normally sell between 1200 and 1500 uniforms (outfits are known as "gears") but some teams are around the 2000 mark. There are also many smaller teams as well. Most teams consists of owners and or directors, captains and soldiers (soldaat in Afrikaans) and most of their rank is indicated by the colours of style of the gears. There's the "singpak" or choir, the "voorloeper" or drum major, kriewel squad, kids, jingle squad (tambourines with tin), "houte band" is basically the wooden drums or "gummie", "tamariene/tamareine" are the animal skin wooden tambourines and in recent years, the African djemba drum has been added for a higher pitched in between sound. You then get your percussion that consists mostly of your bass drums, snare drums, symbols and the Latin or wooden or plastic cowbells. Your brass has mostly trumpets, trombones, saxophones and sousaphones. The rest dance behind the band and includes men, women, children, the elderly etc. They dance with umbrellas and there are lots of whistles to be heard within the troop. "voorsmaakies", 5. at stadium and even at the 6. CT Carnival that happens annually in March. 1. Tweedenuwejaar literally means second new year and is an annual event in Cape Town that traditionally falls on the 2nd of Jan. It may be moved if it falls on Muslim or Christian holy days. CT has a strong Muslim n Christian community that lives side by side. Hundreds of thousands of people line the street to see the various troops in their new colour satin n sequins outfits parade from District 6 to Bokaap (read up on it). Not only do many Capetonians come to watch this spectacle with a carnival atmosphere but many people from South Africa, the continent and the world! I've done a few interviews on international tv with tv crews from around the world coming to capture the day, which has been compared to a different Rio carnival. 2. Road marches normally happen so the public can see the troops new colours or even tracksuits/supporter wear, hence they're not wearing satin. JBE as an example, always practiced at a school nearby and would parade after every practice for about 800ms to their clubhouse. 3. JBE practices at Westend Primary School and you can see them sitting on steps. 4. Voorsmaakie is what the City of CT allows on a public holiday in December (16th) and is used as a practice run. Here you'll see troops dancing in tracksuits, caps n t-shirts and teasing their satin colours by having sticks with the satin colours or painting their face in the colours or having 1 or 3 umbrellas that will be used for tweedenuwejaar, that's basically 2 weeks away from the 16th of December. 5. A lot of footage was taken at the stadiums where they competed for example the "klopsejol". 6. JBE is the only troop, the last 2 years (before corona) that was invited to the CT Carnival that happens in March so about only 35 out of our 1200 or so members go and parade. I have been fortunate to be apart of this carnival as well, on both occasions. All the footage you see here is the Juvie Boy Entertainers minstrel group but they're wearing different gears as it was taken from most years. Their first year was in the silver, blue n white sequins outfits (Alicia Keys - This girl is on fire) and the last one was last year with the red panama hats, black tops with playing cards imprints and yellow pants (Guantanamera). The minstrels has its connections to America and Holland (read up) and the gears normally consists of satin top, satin pants, bowtie, white collared shirt, panama hat, umbrella and white shoes. As stated in the video, I do not own the rights to the songs (both international and South African) and was taken from YouTube with the intention of showing the capabilities of this troop. All troops come from impoverished areas where gangsterism, drug abuse and crime is high and this keeps kids off the street. Most kids are not musically trained at all and learn the music "by ear".
