Hey guys! I'm so excited to share this thrifted flip with you guys! I received a $25 gift card from @PalmettoGoodwill and was asked to pick an item that was spring/summer related and share my DIY/creation. I have always wanted a larger planter, but its never been in the budget for me… so I bought this $7 metal filing cabinet and got to work! You can use any size metal filing cabinet four drawer or two drawer. The only thing you want to make sure of is that 1. It has a bottom, if you don’t want to build out the wooden side panel like I did, and 2. That its not rusted out too badly! Once you find your cabinet you can get to work cleaning it up & removing the drawers. I sanded mine down with 220 grit sandpaper. I created a simple base with some pressure treated 2x4s that I had on hand already. I used pocket holes… until my square head attachment stripped & I ended up just screwing in 3” exterior screws to join the base square together. I covered the holes with wood filler, sanded it down and cleaned it all up once last time! I had to create a side panel with cedar, since my cabinet did not have a metal base. I REALLY love that I ran into this issue, because it really makes this planter look modern and beautiful! So, you can make yours this way as well even if it does have the bottom! My cabinet was not square at all, so I recommend just cutting all the wooden slats the same length and securing them as one unit. I attached the top piece separately & its actually longer than the panel I secured with the 4 other pieces. Lesson learned. I highly recommend adding filler items like I did to the base part so you aren’t buying tons and tons of soil. It's also better for the drainage. I used a grey primer, did a light sanding between that and adding the black satin spray paint. I used three coats of the black spray paint for complete coverage. Things I wish I knew before starting: 1. To cut the side wooden slats all the same & add them as 1 unit 2. Have the correct size screws on hand 3. I would’ve liked to have had a single sealed drain installed at the bottom straight out of the metal filing cabinet that way water is not sitting within the planter. But, I wanted to make this cost effective.. so I just drilled drainage holes. Next time I'll try out the single drainage mechanism. I love this thrift flip so much. Recycling something old and making it beautiful... too darn cool! Let me know what you guy think in the comments!
