Rare vintage footage from the 1967 IYRU A & B Class Catamaran Trials, the historic event that led to the creation of the Tornado—one of the most iconic high-performance catamarans ever built. In the 1960s, the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU, now World Sailing) set out to select new international catamaran classes. Designers from around the world submitted boats to be tested side by side in a series of trials. From these tests: The A-Class continued as a development class. The B-Class trials produced the design that would become the Tornado, later chosen as the Olympic catamaran. This footage shows the original experimental designs, the early high-performance concepts, and the boats that shaped the future of multihull sailing.
