SEPTA 40th St Station or 40th St Portal is where 4 of the 5 subway surface trolley lines meet to begin & end their runs underground to and from Center City Philadelphia. The 40th St Portal serves SEPTA Routes 11, 13, 34 & 36 trolley lines. The one other subway surface line is the Route 10, it has it's own portal on 34th St. Trolleys enter the portal and run to 13th & Market, looping underneath City Hall before starting another subway run making all subway stops in between. The portal opened in 1955 and allows the trolleys to become subways alleviating congestion in busy Center City Philadelphia. The Kawasaki Single Ended LRV's have been in service with SEPTA since 1980. The portal is a hive of activity. With four lines picking up and discharging passengers there is always plenty of action. The 11,13 & 36 use Woodland Ave to access the portal, the 34 uses Baltimore Ave. At one point nine trolleys spill out of the portal in just a few minutes (18:37). If you love trolleys like me, the 40th St. Portal is the place for you! Thanks for watching!
