SOUNDBITE (Kiswahili) Taliban Onyango, Kenyan trader: "The challenge we have today is that we are not able to operate businesses because of the elections in Tanzania. The Tanzanian police are lobbying tear gas at us. Now we have nothing to feed our kids. We are asking our government to maintain peace at the border so we can go on with our businesses and the same for the Tanzanians." 10. Various of campaign billboard for Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzanian president STORYLINE: Continued protests in Tanzania following a disputed election spread across the border with Kenya on Thursday. Cross-border traffic ground to a halt in the Kenyan border town of Namanga, following confrontations between Kenyan traders angered by the impact of the protests and police officers in Tanzania. According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated when Tanzanian officers reportedly lobbed tear gas canisters across the border. The unrest in Tanzania has disrupted cross-border trade operations, with both traders and travelers stranded as authorities from both countries try to contain the violence. The unrest on the border came as nationwide protests in Tanzania continued for a second day. Turnout during Wednesday’s election was low, and chaos broke out in the afternoon as protesters burned a bus and a gas station, attacked police stations and vandalized polling centers. Two people, a civilian and a police officer, died in Wednesday’s protests, according to Amnesty International. The government has yet to comment about casualties in the ongoing protests. The ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party, which has been in power since independence in 1961, sought to extend its rule in Wednesday’s election, with candidates from the two main opposition parties barred from running. Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan faced 16 candidates from smaller parties who barely campaigned. The electoral body on Thursday announced through state television that Hassan had taken an early lead, garnering 96.99% of the votes in 8 out of 272 constituencies tallied early Thursday. Lawmakers from the European Parliament said in a statement Thursday that the elections were “neither free nor fair” and urged democratic partners to “stand firm in the defense of democracy and human rights.” AP video by Moses Ndungu =========================================================== Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements.
