The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a direct sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It was first published in England in December 1884. It was republished in the US in 1885 and it proved to be the most celebrated novel by Mark Twain, despite the controversies related to it. The novel is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri. This novel condemns the institutionalized racism of the South of Pre-Civil War America and it gained a huge success. Mark Twain continued to express the exuberance of his young lad characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn that he introduced in the previous novel Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The novel shows the moral confusion of Huck who vows to help a slave and keeps his words. The story suggests that being a part of this world, some lying skills are worthy. The novels suggest that people in general, refuse to take responsibility for their own actions. Huck, being a white boy is taught that helping black people is immoral and if they help a runaway slave, they will go to hell. But he chose to listen to his gut feeling and decides to help Jim in any situation. So this is it all about the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It became a bigger success than the first novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and it is widely considered one of the Great American Novels. One of the reasons for its success was that Mark Twain wrote Huckleberry Finn in the first-person narrative while Tom Sawyer was written in the third-person narrative. The book was criticized widely for the depiction of off-track kids admired as heroes. Louisa May Alcott claimed that if Mark Twain can’t write anything better for American kids, he should better stop writing. Earnest Hemmingway criticized the last parts of the novel as an unnecessary stretch. However, Hemmingway said “All modern American literature comes from” Huckle Finn and declared it as “the best book we’ve had.” So this is it for today.
