As important as oxygen is for our cells, athletes eventually get used to being out of breath. Interestingly, so do certain tumors that thrive in an oxygen-poor environment. Yasemin Cole, a graduate student in the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Health, is studying cancer cells with mutations that make them behave as if they’re suffocating. Her research could one day lead to new treatments that can knock the wind out of cancer.
