The teenager who stabbed private schoolgirl Elianne Andam to death in south London had a history of knife-related violence and began smoking cannabis regularly in the weeks before the killing. Hassan Sentamu, now 18, attacked the 15-year-old when she showed a “gesture of solidarity” with his ex-girlfriend, who was trying to retrieve her favourite teddy bear following their split in September 2023. They had arranged to meet to exchange personal possessions but, when Sentamu failed to bring the teddy bear, Elianne grabbed his bag and attempted to run away. The sports science student gave chase and, when he caught up with her at a bus stop, repeatedly stabbed her in the neck, severing her carotid artery. Sentamu admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility but denied murder, claiming he could not be guilty because he had Autism Spectrum Disorder and a low IQ. But an Old Bailey jury rejected his explanation after hearing how he took a kitchen knife along to the meeting, having been humiliated the previous day when the girls splashed him with water. Following a three-week trial, the jury found Sentamu, from New Addington, near Croydon, guilty of murder by a majority of 10 to two and unanimously guilty of possession of a blade. There were shouts of “yes” and “murderer” from the public gallery as the jury delivered the verdicts after deliberating for 11 hours and 42 minutes.
