"Archaeology with a bite: comparing biological affinities of Near Eastern populations using dental non-metric traits". Dr Nina Maaranen (Visiting Fellow at Bournemouth University, United Kingdom). Monday, November 29th, 2021 5 pm - Rome, Paris, Berlin (CET / GMT+2) 6 pm - Turkey (UTC+3) 11 am - New York (ET / GMT-4) Organizer: Arwa Kharobi (Bournemouth University). Non-metric traits, sometimes called epigenetic traits, are normal variations of the human skeleton. The traits, though seemingly random in a single person, have a genetic component that links biologically closely related people together, enabling an exploration of biological affiliations not only within but also between populations. As a non-invasive method, non-metric trait analysis can be used to study biological closeness when there is no wish or possibility to use DNA analysis. An increasing number of non-metric trait analyses is being conducted on human skeletal (and dental) remains, including in sites across Western Asia. These results, complementary to other methods, help to form a view of population histories and movement. This presentation gives an overview of the study material, the methods available as well as a case study from a Middle Bronze Age site in the eastern Mediterranean.
