The annual celebration for larger locomotion at the Bluebell was held between the 17th - 19th of October and would highlight the outstanding achievement of new builds. This gala would be the first time that all four current new builds that would be on the same railway together all while running to an intensive timetable across the Sussex countryside. The first new build out of the four to be completed would be A1 Peppercorn Pacific No 60163 ‘Tornado’. Being completed in 2008, Tornado really has had an illustrious career for an engine that’s only 16 years old. She’d be the first steam engine to run at 100mph on a test train in 2017, she’s appeared in countless movies and other media such as well known shows: Top Gear and Paddington. Tornado would bow out of mainline service in November 2021 upon discovery of wheel flats but would continue running on the heritage circuit until withdrawal in January 2022 for a full scale overhaul. This overhaul would see updated safety equipment fitted to Tornado, mainly ETCS, European Train Control System, which is part of the wider signalling upgrade scheme for the East Coast Mainline. The overhaul would be completed in August 2024 where she’d complete her running in at the Great Central Railway. Next oldest new build would be GWR Saint 2999 ‘Lady of Legend’ which would be completed at the Didcot Railway Centre in 2019. 2999 is a recreation of a Saint class locomotive which fills gap in preservation. The completion of 2999 would come after a long 45 years of hard work but would be rewarded greatly upon steaming for the first time in 2019. ‘The Saint’ has been a popular favourite to visit heritage railways across the country since appearing on the Severn Railway’s 2024 autumn gala & the West Somerset’s Spring Gala In 2025 appearing as classmate ‘Robin Hood’. Another new build Great Western Engine would also grace Bluebell Metals for the first time being GWR Grange No 6880 ‘Betton Grange’. A project that started in 1998 was eventually finished in early 2024 as Betton Grange became the 81st member of its class. 80 Granges were constructed at Swindon Works and a further batch were to be constructed however due to WW2, the subsequent batch was cancelled and with Betton Grange set to be next in line, the decision was made to allow Betton Grange to be the newest member of it’s class. Betton Grange is also a frequent visitor to many lines across the country however she is most frequently seen at GWSR. Representing the Bluebell would be our own new build: Atlantic No 32424 ‘Beachy Head’. Built at Brighton Works in September 1911, withdrawn in April 1958 and subsequently scrapped at Eastleigh in May 1958. After many long years, an Atlantic can once again be seen steaming around Sussex. Back in October 2000 the Bluebell Railway announced that it planned on reconstructing a Brighton H2 Atlantic ‘Beachy Head’. Fast forward to 2025 and that dream is now a reality with Beachy Head regularly fronting services across our branchline with rarely a fault. Also would like to give a shoutout to @benjenden4997 for the Gen Z gala title that I shamelessly liked and used for my own title. Do believe that a few others mentioned the name also so a quick shoutout to many others also! Also a slight disclaimer, yes 32424, 2999 & 6880 are technically Gen Alpha but Gen Z is funnier so send your complaints to [email protected] Follow me on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chaileystow...
