Quitting kratom was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I've been free of the addiction to kratom for a year and a half. If it wasn't for one tiny dose in November of 2021 it would be 2 years kratom free. The process was a long one because I started by trying to quit cold turkey. But I found that every time I tried to do that I would have such dark thoughts that if I didn't take a dose of kratom, I might end my own life. I tried quitting kratom cold turkey several times. Between each attempt, months would pass. After a couple years of repeatedly trying and failing to quit cold turkey I decided that maybe I needed to ween myself off of kratom by tapering my doses. I thought I would treat it like coming off of medication for mood disorders, depression and anxiety. Being on those medications and having times of not being able to get refills because of lack of insurance, I had moments when I suddenly didn't have the medication I needed and the result was never good, leading to similar problems when trying to quit kratom. Except suddenly being without kratom felt much worse. So I started by delaying when I would take my first dose. For years I had been taking kratom as soon as I woke up. I decided to try to not take it until I had been awake an hour. Once my body got used to that, I would decrease my dose in half. Once my body got used to that half dose, I would push it to not taking it until 2 hours awake. I repeated this process until all my doses were cut in half. Once all my doses were cut in half, I started pulling in the last dose for the day. Slowly pulling in the last dose of the day until my first dose and last dose of kratom were in a small 4 hour window. Once my body was used to the small doses I was taking in the 4 hour window which for me was 3 doses (I took a dose every 2 hours), I quit taking it when I ran out of kratom. My body managed that much better. It still ached, I still dealt with headaches, and I was still cranky. But the overwhelming dark thoughts, crippling fatigue, and straight up pain was not there. After 2 weeks of not taking kratom at all, my body was no longer dependent on it. The physical addiction to kratom was no more. But mentally, that's a different story. So I started to stop taking kratom in 2015 and it took me until 2018 to break free of the physical addiction. My mind was still addicted to it though. It took me another 3 years to let that go. But beating a mental addiction is an entirely different topic for another day. To recap: Slowly ween yourself. Cut your doses in half, one by one, until your body is used to it. That is CRUCIAL to let your body adjust every single time you make a change. If you were taking the standard dose or a dose much higher than standard, you will need to cut your doses in half another time or 2 before you stop it completely. Again, please let your body adjust for at the very LEAST a week. I typically went 10-14 days between adjustments. This is a process. Be patient with yourself and give yourself love. You will likely have days you feel you failed or messed up. Just start again the next day. One bad day does not discredit how far you've already come. You will get through this. Just be persistent. I hope this helps. Please reach out if you have questions.
