Professor Dan Davis from the Cellular Immunology Branch of the Lydia Becker Institute gives his talk 'Watching Immune Cells Kill' at the Summer Symposium held on the 7th June at The Whitworth Dan pioneered the use of many imaging techniques to help visualize key molecular components of an immune response and his work has helped establish new concepts in how immune cells communicate with each other, including the immune synapse and membrane nanotubes. His most recent research, using super-resolution microscopy, was listed in Discover magazine as one of the top 100 breakthroughs of the year. Dan also champions public discussion of immunology and has appeared on several TV and radio programs as well as at many science, literary, and music festivals. He is the author of three popular science books, The Compatibility Gene (Penguin, 2014), The Beautiful Cure (Vintage, 2018), and The Secret Body (Vintage, 2021). His books have been translated into over 15 languages. He has also written for The Times, Sunday Times, Guardian, Observer, New Scientist, Wired and Scientific American. Dan is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Science and the author of over 140 academic papers, collectively cited over 15,000 times
