Emerging Chinese brand GWM continues to make waves, this time with its new Tank sub-brand of 4x4s. The first to launch in Australia is the 2023 GWM Tank 300 mid-size SUV, which has the Jeep Wrangler firmly in its sights. But unlike its American rival, the Tank 300 has a trick up its sleeve: a self-charging full hybrid powertrain. With a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, it produces a combined 258kW of power and 615Nm of torque. In this segment, those are formidable outputs. That said, the boxy-looking Tank 300 still comes with a proper ladder-frame chassis, a low-range transfer case and a locking rear differential. So, it means serious business off the beaten track.
