Naval News takes you aboard JS Kumano (FFM-2), one of the latest and most modern surface combatant in the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF)'s fleet. We interview exclusively the commanding officer, CMDR Atushi Sakurai, on the FFM class of frigates. The missions, weapons and systems aboard (including the very advanced circular CIC). CMDR Sakurai also discusses the current deployment of the ship: IPD23. Kumano (くまの) named after the Kumano river in the Kii Peninsula of central Japan, located in Nara, Wakayama and Mie Prefectures) was launched by local shipbuilder Mitsui E & S Shipbuilding Co., Ltd in Okayama in November 2020. The ship was commissioned with the JMSDF on 22 March 2022. The FFM multi-mission frigates have a full load displacement of about 5,500 tons, with a length of 132.5 meters and a beam of 16.3 meters. They have a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots.
