In this week’s video I will elaborate on the 6 investing principles utilizing Apple (AAPL), AbbVie (ABBV), CVS Health (CVS), Oracle (ORCL). Additionally, I will provide a sample of a portfolio that I constructed in 2019 with the investment objective of achieving a safe total return. Horton Dr. (DHI), Prudential (PRU), AmerisourceBergen (ABC), Alexion (ALXN), Amgen (AMGN), Ameriprise (AMP), Cardinal (CAH), Crown Holdings (CCK), FedEx (FDX), Foot Locker (FL), General Dynamics (GD), Omega (OHI), Penske (PAG), Royal Bank of Canada (RY), Snap On (SNAP). The key factor that I focus on is how the margin of safety principle provided with safety and enhanced returns. As a student of economics, you could say that I had a love-hate relationship with John Maynard Keynes. Like Keynes’ father, I am an advocate of laissez-faire economics which supports the principle that the less the government is involved in the economy the better off the economy and society as a whole will be. Keynesian economics in contrast supported the idea that government should increase spending and lower taxes when faced with a recession, to create jobs and boost consumer buying power. Therefore, when it came down to economic theory, I am a proponent of Milton Friedman and his strong belief in free-market capitalism. Consequently, like Milton Friedman, I rejected Keynesian economic theory. This explains the “hate” part of my love-hate relationship with John Maynard Keynes. On the other hand, the love part of my love-hate relationship with Keynes is rooted in his value-oriented investment philosophy. At the end of the day, I have never been a fan of Keynesian economics. On the other hand, I would only be arrogant if I did not recognize and acknowledge the intellectual prowess of John Maynard Keynes. The fact that he was a true value investor who not only recognizes its importance, but passionately supported value investing made him a friend and colleague. People do not have to agree on everything to garner and deserve the respect of others.
