6 June 2023, CGHE webinar Mei LI, East China Normal University Wen XU, East China Normal University By taking two contrasting cases (one is a “Youth Thousand Talent Program” awardee in natural sciences, the other is an overseas returnee in social sciences), the seminar aims to explore the different experiences, pathways and academic career development of Chinese returnees with overseas doctoral degrees. We illustrate how a top-notch scientist and an average overseas returnee grow up as early career researchers in Chinese higher education (HE). Specifically, we shed the spotlight on the following questions: What are the patterns and characteristics of early career development of “Youth Thousand Talent Program” awardees? How do overseas returnees as agents mobilize resources and carve out spaces for career development so as to integrate into Chinese academia? How do overseas returnees’ academic pathways and experiences differ STEM disciplines to those of humanities and social sciences? How do the academic career development of overseas returnees of “Youth Thousand Talent Program” distinct from that of less privileged overseas returnees? In the webinar, we highlight and discuss the dynamic and complex relationship between the agents and structure (i.e. the Chinese HE institutional milieu) in shaping the “spaces” of professional development. Noticing differentiated policies implemented among overseas returnees, we call for institutional change and organisational policy in Chinese HE, so as to build a more inclusive and fair work environment that ultimately leads to the flourishing of both overseas and domestically trained academics, regardless of their disciplines, gender, age and academic background.
