Raised by a single mother, Hughes and his twin brother were given a video camera to explore their creative interests. After spending years making home movies, the brothers utilized their high school experiences to further develop their filmmaking skills, with Albert taking a TV production class and his brother focusing on theater for acting. Despite both dropping out in Grade 11, the brothers continued to pursue their passion for filming. They caught their big break in a friend's party when they were introduced to Tamra Davis, a successful hip-hop video director. With Davis's help, they started building their portfolio and began distributing it to various record companies, which marked the start of their professional career in film.
