Every year, 90% of the seafood consumed in the U.S. is imported from abroad. This volume of importation costs the U.S. $17 billion in trade deficit. Increasing our local blue foods production will not only offset these costs but also add diversity to Midwestern diets, promoting overall health and sustainability. Watch this video to tour a pilot scale version of an aquaponics system being studied at @PurdueUniversitypart of the When Blue is Green (BiG) project. This project is a Purdue-led multidisciplinary team aiming increase local and regional production of seafood. To achieve this, we will research and develop an environmentally sustainable and economically viable food production system using aquaponics. We will also assess the economic and environmental performance of the system, engage with stakeholders, and create educational materials.
