The most important controls of the PSA-1 are BUZZ, PUNCH, CRUNCH and DRIVE. They are in charge of creating the tone and they do it in such a unique way even for today standards. That is why this device is revered as one of the most incredible bass processors ever made... These controls could be seen as tone controls mixed with distortion, so they would be a kind of distortion controls focused on different key areas of the spectrum. For example, BUZZ adds or subtracts character but at the same time body to the sound of the bass. Increase this control to create low thunder or reduce it to use it on thin bass effects or on isolated slap tracks. PUNCH does the same but in the area of mids or low mids of the spectrum. This is the ideal knob to add presence to the bass and make it translate well into smaller speakers. Also if this knob is reduced it will create the #Korn style scooped bass sound. CRUNCH is focused on the area where the brightness of the strings and the sound of the touch of the fingers are. This control can add definition or, if reduced, create lo-fi effects. DRIVE works more like a standard overdrive control, in our opinion it affects the full spectrum and of course reacts more to the areas of more energy of the signal therefore it is level sensitive. As you could verify by manipulating the tone with these controls we also affect the distortion and it could be the case that when changing the tone we could lose or gain more distortion than desired, or vice versa... The way we use it is: 1- Adjust the tone with the four controls. 2- Adjust the distortion with PRE-AMP. PRE-AMP is a kind of input level control so it can be used to control the signal that reaches the next four controls and thus control their character without affecting their tone. When we move PRE-AMP to control the overall distortion there is also a volume change so it is better to use PRE-AMP in combination with the output LEVEL knob to ensure that the sound remains close to Unity Gain all the time. LOW and HIGH are completely clean extra tone controls that can be used to give the final touches and balance the tone achieved with the four previous controls without affecting the distortion previously achieved. Additionally Nembrini has added a useful WET-DRY control which allows to integrate the sound of the unit with the direct sound in a parallel process. In the original unit this is not possible so the default position represents the classic sound but this option is 100% welcome. The PHASE switch reverses the polarity by 180 degrees, this can be useful when tracks are used in parallel to guarantee or at least check that the processes do not cause loss of energy by phase cancellation. The stereo version consists of a mono version for each channel with the possibility of linking each of the knobs or treat each channel separately or in Mid-Side mode. SPREAD creates differences between the L and R channels with a pleasant process that sounds like a mix of modulation and delay similar to Soundtoys Microshift or Waves Doubler. The stereo version also has independent controls of INPUT and OUTPUT which inclines us to think that they differ in something from the PRE-AMP and LEVEL controls that we explained in the Jr. version.
