The second Sub's bridge number 21-3 burned on September 2nd, 2011 from a wildfire caused by a lightning strike near highway 95 which started a fire to rage uphill burning the bridge and severing the rail line between Culdesac and Rubens Idaho. Some effort was made to save the trestle by helicopters/planes, but their attention soon turned to saving the power transmission line that crossed the canyon close by. In the third photo, a single rail can be seen spanning the gap where the trestle used to be. It is not known if the bridge will be rebuilt. This video shows a set of still photos taken on the last PRO speeder trip from Culdesac up to near Powerline Road and back down the grade leaving the Second Sub at Spalding Jct. The speeder trip on the Second Sub occurred on May 31st, 2010. Jim Morefield passed on today (Nov 27th, 2011) and I want to say it was an honor to have met and know this man. The second sub was his life's work up to the point he retired from the railroad. Many stories about the line were told by him in the six speeder trips on this line I attended under his coordination. I am glad to have been within earshot of them and try to the best of my abilities be able to retain them for others to hear. Jim, you will be sorely missed.
