This video demonstrates experiential letter writing, a powerful role-play technique used in psychodrama and Relational Trauma Repair healing. In this process, letters can be written to someone and read aloud to an empty chair or a role player—or, as in this example, a person may write the letter they longed to receive and choose a role player to represent that parent. Here, an adult child writes the letter she wished her mother had written to her and invites a role player to read it standing in for her mother. This allows long-missing words of care, acknowledgment, and repair to be spoken and received in a safe, contained, therapeutic way. Experiential letters can be written and shared in one-to-one work, group settings, and both in-person and virtual environments. They may be read to an empty chair, a role player, a therapist, a small cluster, or a full group—depending on what feels most supportive and regulating. Writing often allows feelings and truths to come onto the page that might feel too vulnerable, overwhelming, or impossible to say out loud. The experience of reading these letters—especially when they are witnessed—can be deeply healing, regulating, and releasing. Many people describe a settling in the nervous system, emotional relief, and a sense of being seen. Letters are often kept and reread over time as a source of comfort and grounding. These letters are not meant to be sent. They are written for therapeutic purposes only, offering a safe way to express longing, grief, and truth, and to begin internalizing new relational experiences. This video offers a living example of how experiential letter writing and role play help transform unspoken pain into connection, clarity, and healing.
