An Ozarkadia Films and Seeing Subsistence Production by Charlotte Brown, Patrick Knight, Kathryn Carnes, and Holly Bratcher under the supervision of Dr. Brian Campbell. Udderly Amazing: A Documentary about Raw Milk in Georgia screened at the Berry College Symposium on Student Scholarship 2023 In our film, we wanted to explore why Georgia laws require that raw milk may only be sold for pet consumption and showcase how farmers are affected by this policy. We included interviews with and raw footage of a local farmer who produces unpasteurized milk and raw milk consumers in Rome, GA. With the intent of reaching a larger audience, we employ a lighthearted, silly tone, while still being educational. We started the film by including consumer reviews of raw milk. By using TikTok, we learned how people across the country viewed raw milk and used this to establish a wider context for our story. Next, we went through the history and process of how fear grew around raw milk as the popularity of pasteurization grew. Although these policies have allowed for the safe mass distribution of milk, it has hurt local farmers who cannot afford the expensive transition to pasteurization. Interviewing a local milk farmer and people from the community who regularly consume raw milk brought relevance and a personal perspective to a niche topic and allowed us to demonstrate that raw milk is commonly used in many households and should be less stigmatized in our society. This project is in direct correlation with both Anthropology and Environmental Science and Studies because it deals with how government policy has made it more difficult for small local farms to operate and be successful. Through this film, we examined aspects of our culture, both on a corporate and local scale, and explored the importance and benefits of local farms and raw milk.
