(9 Aug 2022) SHOTLIST: RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Bijeljina - 9 August 2022 1. Corn field, dried up and burned corn crops 2. Burned corn crops, turned yellow because of heat 3. Burned corn 4. Corn leaves 5. Earth cracked in the corn field due to drought 6.Corn leaves dried up 7. SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Nebojsa Djokic, farmer: "This year, in my opinion, the drought took away 90% of crops. I would say almost total drought, total damage. I was trying to collect some corn for cattle food on my land, but this year corn didn't even grow more then a meter (3.2 feet), and there is no corn cobs at all. In some crops it grew a bit, but there is no maize on it. It's total damage. Thing is that this corn is not good even as cattle food, so many people who are in the cattle business, same as I am, will be forced to sell their cattle because they have nothing to feed them with." 8. Farmer opening corn crop, showing corn inside didn't grow enough 9. Corn leaves dried up by heat 10. SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Nebojsa Djokic, farmer: "Looking realistically at this situation, I think cattle production (in Bosnia) will be down for at least 50% this year. It's not because of prices of meat or milk, but it's because people just have nothing to feed their cattle with, considering this drought. Some of the farmers around here have 100% damage from the drought." 11. Dried up corn leaves 12. Dried up corn cob 13.Corn field 14. Dried up corn field STORYLINE: Bosnia is among countries hit by severe drought this summer, and its agriculture sector is badly affected. One farmer in north-east Bosnia, where most of the country's wheat and corn are produced, says corn crops this year have sustained 90% damage. "I was trying to collect some corn for cattle food on my land, but this year corn didn't even grow more then a meter (3.2 feet), and there is no corn cobs at all," said Nebojsa Djokic, a farmer in Bijeljina. Weeks have passed without a drop of rain in the Balkans, and temperatures throughout July and August have been extremely high, even by local standards, where summers are usually hot, with daily temperatures in the lower 40's celsius (104 Fahrenheit upwards). In the area around nearby Brcko, local authorities reported that nearly 70% of corn has been destroyed by high temperatures and lack of rain. Around 4,500 acres of corn fields around the town have been affected by drought. State-level authorities still refuse to declare a national emergency because of drought, claiming that Bosnia can be resupplied with wheat and corn from neighboring countries, But the drought has also affected also bigger crop-producing countries nearby, such as Hungary and Serbia, so it's likely that further imports could also be hit. Agriculture makes up over 7% of annual Bosnian GDP, and some 130,000 people work in the sector. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
