Image/Video Upscaling by Machine Learning [Image Processing, 2019]

We demonstrate the state of the art in image and video upscaling (super resolution) by Generative Adversarial Networks, a class of deep learning neural networks. There are obvious benefits of being able to add resolution to images and videos that have already been taken. Here we demonstrate the state of the art in 4X super resolution, taking 270p video to Full HD and 540p to 4K. The result of super resolution algorithms prove to be superior than classical image processing techniques such as a combination of blur, unsharp mask, de-noise and anti-compression filters. We found that the neural network was able to introduce new detail and depth to the low resolution image that contributed to an overall higher signal to noise ratio.
