The LSWR 415 Class "Adams Radial" tank engine was simply too weird and wonderful for me to pass up. So named because of the "radial" trailing truck mechanism, these locomotives were mostly outmoded by the close of WWI, but several did continue service on the Lyme Regis line until the 1960's. The sole survivor of the class lives at the Bluebell Railway, now needing extensive overhaul and restoration work to run again. I've had quite the experience with this model. I purchased one in December 2019, a DCC sound fitted model in EKR livery (my favorite livery offered for the locomotive). It barely made it three feet on the layout before the decoder burst into flame (not an exaggeration, there was a good arc!) and fried itself and the pcb board. The model shop I purchased it from has been very kind, and asked me to send it back to them for them to pass on to Oxford Rail directly to have them look at it. This was in mid January, and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, understandably there is serious delay, and I have not had word back yet on the repairs/replacement/whathaveyou. While I have been waiting, I happened to find another EKR DCC sound fitted 415 class on a popular online auction site for an incredibly good deal, too good to pass up. That second model is recorded running in this video, and I have not had any trouble with it aside from needing to perform a little maintenance as it was second-hand and had been run a good deal. The only thing I did do was remove the springs and pickups from the trailing truck, as it was under so much tension from the factory springs that the wheels wouldn't rotate. This video was from early March 2020, before shelter in place efforts were ordered in my state, and when my model railroad club was open. All in all, I've had mixed experiences with Oxford Rail models. They have released and executed absolutely gorgeous and wonderful prototypes I have been very interested in, but my Dean Goods suffered from an incorrectly put together PCB and gummy lubricant which stunted performance until I figured it out, and with the Adams Radial blowout, I'm not sure what to think. I hope I have just been unlucky, and that Oxford Rail can continue to improve their mechanism and manufacturing quality control while developing future models. I have been seriously impressed with everything else about their models (superior to Hornby in my opinion), but unreliable mechanisms really let them down.
