By 1953, reconstruction was well underway. Full rebuilding stretched through to 1957. 01:28 Puente de San Martín Constructed in the late 14th century under Archbishop Pedro Tenorio, the bridge features five pointed arches—the central one spanning an impressive 40 meters, a remarkable engineering feat for its time. It’s built from carefully fitted ashlar stone and fortified with two hexagonal towers at each end. Declared a National Monument in 1921, the bridge had long been a vital connection across the Tagus River Up until 1976, it accommodated vehicular traffic, including cars, buses, and trucks, before being restricted to pedestrian use 01:54 Origin as a Minaret: The original minaret was constructed in the mid-10th century under Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, standing about 47 m tall on a square base of ~8.5 m per side. Following damage from a storm in 1589, a thick Renaissance bell tower was built around the minaret by architect Hernán Ruiz III, beginning in 1593. The work was later continued by Juan Sequero de Matilla, and finalized by Gaspar de la Peña, including the installation of a cupola and a figure of Saint Raphael in 1664. The bell tower stands 54 m tall—making it Córdoba’s tallest structure. It features a solid quadrangular shaft with Serliana-style openings at the bell level, surmounted by a lantern and topped with a dome and the sculptural figure of Saint Raphael.
