CLAUDIO ARRAU plays "Funérailles" from the 1853 cycle "Harmonies Poétiques Et Religieuses S.173" by FRANZ LISZT. Liszt's most famous funeral march is subtitled "Oktober 1849" and functions as a tribute to the failed Hungarian revolution. Lajos Batthyány, a friend of Liszt, was executed in the October month of 1848 because of his involvement in the uprising. Two other friends, Felix Lichnowsky and László Teleki, of which the former got killed fighting for the same cause, are also thought to be references in this composition. The famous opening introduces the listener to a church scenery with the loud bell-like notes in the bass while the dissonant cords illustrate the rough and harsh musical identity of Hungary. A lyrical lagrimoso in A-flat Major and the triumphant trombone-like section (with cantering of battle horses in the bass) are meant to serve as reminders of the misfortune and bravery found in the rebellion. The galloping of the battle horses returns at the very end of the piece, indicating that while the 1848 revolt ended tragically, the war is yet to be over, as the spirit of the uprising continues to be ready to fight.
