Worlds BIGGEST Triple Expansion Steam Engine! - Kempton Steam Museum

Kempton Steam Museum is home to the World's Largest Triple Expansion Engine which are very similar to the Titanic if you have ever wondered how to start an 800 ton engine then this video will show you how. Kempton Steam Museum is home to two of these giant engines they were used for pumping water round London from 1926 to 1980. They could each pump 19 million imperial gallons of water per day. This video shows the start up of of these engines and a view of each floor while the engine is running We sart with the use of a smaller engine called a donkey engine is engaged with the main engine which gets it turning over slowly. After a few rotations and the momentum has built up the steam is then let into the triple expansion engine and it starts turning over. Once the big engine has been started the donkey engine is disengaged from the triple expansion engine and is stopped. This is the process of what would have been used to start the two main engines on the Titanic and Olympic Class of Ship. Although none of the Olympic Class of Ship engines survived into preservation only chance being the Olympic when it was decommissioned and scrapped between 1935 to 1939, Kempton's Engines are the closest engine in size to what once powered the Titanic. The Titanic had 2 Triple Expansion Engines and a Steam Turbine which powered the ship. The engines were an in-line 4 configuration and weigh in at an impressive 720 tons while Kempton's Engines are an in-line 3 and weight in at 800 tons, Both of the engines came in at 63ft tall (19 metres). Kempton engine has been used in many Titanic documentaries and films being compared to the engine room once on the ship. My favourite film which features Kempton's Sir William Prescott engine is 'Saving the Titanic' which follows the story of the engineers who kept the lights on the ship to the very end.
