SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Viktor Fedorenko, commercial director of Ascania-Flora: "At the beginning of the war, the flower market almost fully stopped. After, it started to recover, but the loss of our territories, the problems with logistics, troubles with energy supply, and the increase in energy prices, both electricity and gas, are all giving us big challenges.” 8. "The girls at war right now, who are defending our country, they should be thought about first," Yelena Biloivan, a 24-year-old Kyiv resident, said after receiving a bouquet of roses from her fiancé. "They need to be loved and cared about.” Celebrated on March 8, International Women's Day honours the social, political, cultural, and economic accomplishments of women worldwide. Additionally, the day serves as a call to action for advancing women's equality. Ascania-Flora is the biggest flower supplier in Ukraine, and the company's massive greenhouses outside Kyiv, are one of the largest in Europe. Viktor Fedorenko, commercial director of Ascania-Flora, said that the flower business halted at the start of Russia's invasion but it has slowly recovered since then, although is not the same as before. "The loss of our territories, the problems with logistics, troubles with energy supply, and the increase in energy prices, both electricity and gas, are all giving us big challenges,” he said. In 20 hectares, his company produced more than 40 million roses in 2024. But daily power cuts in Ukraine have a serious effect on their business. According to Fedorenko, with a stable electricity supply, the Ascania-Flora could grow and sell up to 70 million roses in a year. Fedorenko said that his company sold more than 100,000 roses for International Women’s Day, a clear sign that Ukrainians are happy to spend money on flowers, regardless of the harsh economic situation brought by Russia’s invasion.
