Watch this animation to learn more about this principle of column-based magnetic cell separation. For more information visit https://www.miltenyibiotec.com/produc... Cell separation of magnetically labeled cells takes place in the MACS® Column, a component of the CliniMACS Prodigy® Tubing Set. The column contains a matrix composed of superparamagnetic spheres, which are covered with a cell-friendly coating. When the column is placed in the CliniMACS Prodigy Magnet Unit , the spheres amplify the magnetic field 10,000-fold. This induces a strong magnetic field within the column that retains cells being labeled with nano-sized MACS MicroBeads or CliniMACS Reagents. Inside the magnetic column, the space between the spheres is about 20 times the size of a lymphocyte, so cells can move freely and are only retained by magnetic forces. This ensures a gentle flow of cells, without pressure, sticking or compression, allowing cell integrity and characteristics to be preserved. Cells are then fully functional ready for downstream applications. Miltenyi Biotec is a global provider of products and services that advance biomedical research and cellular therapy.
