Guest Lecture for University College Cork's Study of Religions Research Seminar Series. Dr Edward Kessler: "The Sacrifice of Abraham's Son in Judaism, Christianity and Islam" Abraham's attempted sacrifice of his son has been important for the Children of Abraham from an early period. For Jews, from the 3rd century CE, the passage, known as the Akedah, or Binding of Isaac, has been read on Rosh ha-Shana, the Jewish New Year. For Christians from the same period, the Sacrifice of Isaac was mentioned in the Eucharist prayers and the story is read in the period leading up to Easter. For Muslims, the festival of Eid al-Adha commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son at God's command. Dr Edward Kessler explores Jewish, Christian, and Muslim interpretations of the story of the sacrifice of Abraham's son and discusses their similarities and differences. These Interpretations demonstrate the extent to which Jews, Christians and Muslims share an exegetical tradition and Kessler argues that they cannot be understood properly without reference to the other. This has significance for understanding the historical and contemporary Abrahamic encounter.
