Sebastião Salgado is a renowned Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist born on February 8, 1944, in Aimorés, Brazil. His work is marked by powerful black-and-white images capturing the human condition, environmental issues, and social injustice around the world. Salgado initially pursued a career in economics before shifting his focus to photography in the late 1960s. He began his photography career in Paris, where he studied photography and earned a master's degree in economics. His early work focused on Latin America, particularly capturing the lives of peasants and workers. Throughout his career, Salgado has traveled extensively, documenting various global issues such as famine, migration, labor, and the environment. Notable projects include "Workers," which depicts laborers from around the world, and "Genesis," a series showcasing pristine landscapes and indigenous communities. In 1986, Salgado joined Magnum Photos, a prestigious photographic cooperative, and later co-founded Amazonas Images, his own agency. His photographs have been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications worldwide, earning him critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts. Beyond his photographic work, Salgado is also known for his conservation efforts. He and his wife, Lélia Wanick Salgado, have embarked on ambitious environmental projects, including the restoration of a vast tract of land in Brazil's Atlantic Forest, which led to the creation of Instituto Terra, a nonprofit organization focused on environmental conservation and education. Salgado's work serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the urgent need for social and environmental awareness. His photographs continue to inspire and provoke thought on issues of global significance.
