CSX recently placed over 400 locomotives up for disposal. This comes as the road is set to acquire new locomotives from Wabtec as well as rebuilds from the same company. Among the models being removed from the roster are the remaining General Electric C40-8Ws that have been on and off active service for years now, usually coming back on line when traffic increases required more power. With this in mind I present the only two shots I have of these venerable old soldiers. The first is in Montgomery in May 2023. I don’t have a symbol for this train as the speaker on my scanner conveniently stopped working on my drive to Montgomery that day…oh well. The second comes with scanner audio from October 2025 as a Dash 8 trails on M653, a daily manifest between Russell, KY and Rocky Mount, NC. This train had recently moved back to its normal route via the former Clinchfield after running the C&O for the better part of a year following the devastation of much of the Blue Ridge Subdivision by Hurricane Helene. Why CSX sent this one over the C&O, I’m still not sure but I’m sure glad they did
