A quick look at Anacortes WA

Cheri and I recently explored Anacortes, Washington. Anacortes is about 17 miles east off of Interstate 5. It’s located on beautiful Fidalgo Island and hosts an international ferry terminal with trips to the San Juans and Canada. The Washington State Ferry system is the third largest in the world, and the largest in the United States. Over 2 million riders travel through the Anacortes Terminal annually. While visiting for the day we enjoyed the Farmers Market held at the Depot, at 7th Street and R Avenue. The Market runs May - October, every Saturday from 9am - 2pm. For up-to-date hours and information check out AnacortesFarmersMarket.org. We also spent a bit of time in the free maritime museum that chronicles the fascinating history of Anacortes. It’s right there at the Depot, next to the Farmer’s Market. Anacortes is an ocean front fishing town where many homes have a boat in the driveway or the harbor. Local companies will take you out for whale watching; they guarantee you’ll see an Orca, Minke, Gray or Humpback whale 95% of the time. This is also a great spot for sailing, kayaking, crabbing, fishing, birding and boating. We visited the windy and scenic Washington Park; 220 acres of hiking and costal exploration. For a day or a weekend getaway Anacortes is a fun place to explore, and a great jumping off spot to ferry off to Northwest adventures. And the Farmer’s market has awesome carmel corn … kettle corn.
