It's devastating to see that much water in the desert when it's so dangerous you can't even touch it. Every supply, from water, soil amendments, fuel, spare parts... has to cross this canyon. And when floods hit, the crossing becomes a nightmare that destroys not only the equipment, but also the roads. The problem: I'm not allowed to dam or redirect water. Only erosion control. Whatever solution we come up with has to work with tools on hand, a 23-year-old bulldozer and manual labor. First attempt: Daniel built a 6-foot wall. It washed away. Second attempt: I built an extremely wide, low mound (40 feet wide, 4 feet tall max) using 3 hours of dozer time. The theory? To make it so thick that water flows around instead of cutting through. The result? Mixed. The mound protected the entrance and kept it drivable, but much of it washed away.
