Rhubarb Crown Rot Wisconsin Garden Video Blog

We found a problem in our garden called Rhubarb crown rot. Several years ago we added Rhubarb in our orchard area. While Rhubarb in general is trouble free, when crown rot occurs it’s time to remove the entire diseased plant including the root system. We initially thought we could remove all four Rhubarb plants in less than 30-minutes. Much to our surprise, we found massive root systems that took us over 2 hours to remove as best we could. We added a couple of layers of Diatomaceous Earth and worked it into the soil. DE is a fine white abrasive powder made from fossilized diatoms often used as an organic insecticide that can easily kill any bug with an exoskeleton. Our hope is to eliminate further disease or damage to surrounding plants. Since we do not add any diseased plant material in our compost bin, we will bag and dispose of it permanently.
