Successful RCA (Royal College of Art) Contemporary Art Practice MA Application Video Task (23/24)

Around this time last year I was offered a place on RCA's Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) MA course. My offer was made in the first round of applications based on my portfolio/application alone, with no interview. I thought I'd share the video task that I submitted as part of the application in case it could be useful for future applicants, feel free to message me if you have any questions about my experience of the application process or about the course/university in general💗 Here is the statement that I submitted with my application too: My name is Tyler Danielle Potter and I'm applying to study for my MA with the RCA because I think that the university and the city of London will provide the perfect environment in which I can launch my career as an artist. This particular course stood out to me as a result of its focus on the contemporary context of students' work. Significant interests of mine include: handmade textiles and feminism; climate change and the beauty of the natural world; and the current prevalence of anxiety and depression. My proudest endeavours from my time at UCA, while studying for my BA, include my month-long placement at Cyprus College of Art, as well as the planning and execution of my first solo show: ‘Soft and Found’. Additionally, I was selected for CRATE Studio and Project Space’s Graduate Award in recognition of my outstanding achievements. Since graduating, I’ve been living and travelling in Europe on a 28ft sailboat. The challenging experience of residing on the ocean has strengthened my connection to nature, one of my main sources of inspiration, and also expanded my knowledge and understanding of other cultures and languages. While travelling, I have worked with various charities and mentors to learn more about creative enterprise. I'm now confident in my comprehension of what it means to be a self-employed artist and feel that I’m ready to explore my fine art practice further within an academic setting. After completing my MA I’d like to start working as a self-employed artist, which will involve taking commissions, selling my work, organising exhibitions and community projects, attending art fairs and applying for residencies. The aim is for my artwork to meaningfully contribute to contemporary discourse surrounding mental health and feminist issues, while assisting in the fight against climate change.
