Abstract: This talk argues that electronic art can serve as a meaningful methodology to satirize and subvert the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary computing. We present «Friendly Fire at the Shrink», an interactive, AI-driven performance. Staged as a one-on-one session with a virtual therapist, the work explores the fraught relationship between genuine human connection and the computational imitation of empathy. By purposefully designing system failure as a narrative device, we question the tech industry’s solutionist approach to societal issues and provide a space to explore what it means to be human in an age where our vulnerabilities are targeted for technological fixing. Our presentation will elaborate on the technological, architectural and dramaturgical aspects of our work. As a bridge between artistic practice and scientific inquiry, we provide insights into the psychological impact of emerging AI technologies and their possible mitigations by thoughtful design.
