The Steel Pompano is silver-colored fish that looks like a shining diamond swimming through the sea. Its scientific name is Trachinotus stilbe. This name comes from the Greek words trachys, meaning rough, and noton, meaning back, while stilbe means glitter or brightness because of its glowing skin. These fish are native to the Eastern Pacific Ocean and are very common around the Galapagos Islands. They live in warm, clear water near the surface, often staying close to rocky shores or sandy beaches. Steel Pompanos are very social and spend their lives in large groups called schools. They are active hunters that eat small fish, shrimp, and tiny sea creatures. When it is time to breed, they release many eggs into the open ocean. While they can live for several years, their future is at risk because of climate change. As the ocean gets warmer, it can be harder for them to find food or stay in their favorite home near the islands. #EspanolaIsland #Galapagos #galapagosislands
