Bastrop, Tx: Small Town Charm History and Things to Do Near Austin

Bastrop is located about 30 miles Southeast of Austin, and while the drive might take around 45 minutes, sometimes traffic makes it a bit longer. Bastrop is considered part of the Austin Metro area, but it gives you that small town charm feeling. It's become super popular for people who want a more laid back, calmer lifestyle and a country living feel, while still have the option to pop over to the big city whenever. There's definitely a strong sense of community here too. Bastrop is known as the most historic small town in Texas. Its history goes way back to the early 1800s, even before Texas was a state. Historic trails like the El Camino Real and the Old San Antonio Road cross the Colorado River here. And you can really see the history when you walk around the historic downtown area, checking out the architecture and reading the plaques scattered around. Plus old Victorian homes nearby. Even though it has that country, laid-back vibe, there's a good amount of things going on in Bastrop. Downtown is good for wandering around with a mix of restaurants, shopping, antique shops, and places to grab a drink. There's also a scene for culture and music. The Bastrop Opera House has plays and the Lumberyard Music Hall has musical events like swing bands and dancing. Other spots like Gracie's sometimes have live music outside, the Copper Shot Distillery is here, and both 602 Brewing Company and Neighbors Kitchen & Yard have pretty active music calendars with bands and solo artists playing regularly. The town also puts on events like the 1832 Farmers Market on Saturdays and movies in the park. From there I made it out a little further east Roadhouse Paige to play some music. Good times.
