Today, Telluride is known as a world class ski resort, attracting an array of wealthy second homeowners and ski bums alike. If you are visiting Telluride and want a great trail to hike; then we highly recommend that you try the Bear Creek Trail. As one of the more mellow trails out of Telluride, Bear Creek Trail offers newcomers a great way to acclimate to hiking at 9,000 feet before tacking steeper, more lung-busting trails. This trail is popular and well-rounded for many different fitness levels, and has plenty of rewarding views. It is an uphill hike the entire length of the trail. The Bear Creek Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Telluride and can get busy on weekends. We recommend that you try hiking the Bear Creek Trail during the week and early in the morning. The Bear Creek Trail starts on the end of South Pine Street. The paved road ends and the trail begins. There isn't any public parking at the trailhead so you will need to factor in the extra distance from wherever you are staying. Additionally, the Bear Creek Trail does allow for pets. Follow the trail as it heads up hill to a sign marking the beginning of the Bear Creek Reserve. The Bear Creek Preserve (325-acres) was purchased in 1995 by the San Miguel Conservation Foundation, it was put into a conservation easement and then conveyed to the Town of Telluride to be preserved as public open space forever. Beyond the Bear Creek Reserve sign the trail heads southeast toward Bear Creek Canyon, climbing through a forest of aspen and mixed conifers. Openings in the trees offer nice views to the north of the cliffs and peaks towering above Telluride. Bear Creek Trail was once an old mining road, but today is an approximate 5.1-mile round-trip hike to Bear Creek Falls and back. Bear Creek Trail connects with Wasatch Trail, which continues up the canyon. You can meet up with Telluride Ski Area from Wasatch, or even to Bridal Veil Basin, which has another popular waterfall. We really enjoyed hiking the Bear Creek Trail and hope this video motivated you to do the same or at least provided you with some good entertainment.
