LAKE SUPERIOR NORTH SHORE SCENIC DRIVE | GOOSEBERRY FALLS STATE PARK | SPLIT ROCK LIGHTHOUSE PARK

The North Shore of Lake Superior runs from Duluth Minnesota to Thunder Bay Canada. Lake Superior is the word’s largest freshwater lake by surface area and hold 10% of the world’s surface fresh water. Highway 61 is a scenic drive that traverses the entire length and there are eight amazing state parks in Minnesota along Lake Superior. Gooseberry Falls State Park is known for its spectacular Gooseberry Falls. Water from the Gooseberry River plummets over ancient lava flows, in a series of stair step falls. Water drops thirty feet from the Upper Falls, while the Middle and Lower Falls have a combined sixty-foot drop. The Park also has camping, hiking and a beautiful picnic area right on Lake Superior. Split Rock Lighthouse State Park offers visitors beautiful view of Lake Superior, great hiking trails and historic Split Rock Lighthouse. Split Rock Lighthouse was built in 1910 and tours are available for the lighthouse and grounds. The Park also has cart-in campsites and nice picnic areas. We spent our time on Pebble Beach, which is a protected cove where you can swim (if you are brave enough) or just skip stones. Tettagouche State Park has stunning views of Lake Superior, waterfalls, hiking and camping opportunities. Tettagouche has the sixty foot High Falls and is a hiker’s paradise with miles of trails that wind through the Sawtooth Mountains. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to spend much time at the park, due to approaching thunderstorms in the area.
