The church of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the most important sacred buildings in the city of Tivoli, It is located in Piazza Trento and is adjacent to the entrance of Villa d'Este. A legend attributes to the Tiburtine Pope Simplicio (468-483) the construction of the church on the ruins of the Roman residence of the historian Gaius Sallustio Crispo (1st century BC); the pontiff would have consecrated the sacred place dedicating it to the Blessed Virgin. More in-depth studies trace the building back to the years of the great Carolingian revival. The Benedictines of Farfa would therefore have raised the first church and the adjoining convent in the 9th century. The primitive church had an entrance diametrically opposite to the current one. Around 1130 the expansion of the original church was perhaps financed, moving the entrance to its current position, with the opening of three arches to transform a body of the building into a portico which is believed to connect the church with the primitive Benedictine monastery. Other works took place at the end of the thirteenth century, when the rose window was inserted in the facade, the Gothic marble portal was built that gives access to the central nave and the current choir was built, decorated with contemporary frescoes with ornamental motifs. In 1550 the old Benedictine monastery, which had been used as a government palace, saw the entry as governor of Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este (1509-1572), who had it transformed into the current Villa d'Este. The high altar, erected in 1592, contains a precious panel depicting the Advocate Madonna, attributed to Jacopo Torriti, a Roman school painter of the late thirteenth century, author of the apsidal mosaics of the basilicas of San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore and of frescoes in the upper basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.
